About the role:

Elemental Machines is looking for an experienced, full-time VP of Software Engineering to join our team.

The VP of Software Engineering, reporting to the CTO, is an integral part of Elemental Machines’ leadership team, which helps drive the development of the platform and new applications to support aggressive scaling of the business. We are looking for someone with the perfect blend of leadership and technical experience who can manage and grow a distributed software team across different time zones, spearhead cutting edge innovations in key areas related to Internet of Things (IoT), predictive analytics and data visualization, and own the software development lifecycle.

This is a full-time, salaried position.  The candidate should reside in the Greater Boston area and operate out of our Cambridge, MA office in a hybrid role (work from home & on-site as needed).

The Elemental Machines platform elevates LabOps teams in charge of machines, instruments, data, facilities, training, quality, and compliance to lead data-driven discovery, development, and delivery. But there are over 300 Million physical instruments, devices, and machines not yet connected to the cloud. We are simplifying the connection between the physical and digital worlds using IoT and AI-driven insights. The result is a lab united by a universal cloud-connected dashboards and operations.

Responsibilities: 

  • Work directly with the CTO and other members of the senior leadership team to champion an engineering organization that delivers on the needs of the business and customers
  • Support and advise executive leadership regarding technical and architectural feasibility, implications, readiness, security, and compliance
  • Oversee all phases of the software development life cycle 
  • Lead teams of developers to predictably deliver product enhancements, new products and features, and drive delivery of value and stability to customers
  • Embrace inherent uncertainty to allow fluid planning of roadmap implementation and cross-functional coordination
  • Ownership over the process and delivery of day-to-day software engineering
  • Partner closely with Product leaders to define roadmaps, and deliverables
  • Effectively communicate technical issues, advocate solutions, and resolve problems with customers
  • Provide leadership and managerial mentorship to senior engineering leads
  • Lead and build the culture, recruiting and hiring of a growing engineering organization
  • Continue to support members of the engineering team through career development
  • Work with engineering leads to establish processes that support scale and quality

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 15+ years in the Software industry experience in a fast-paced environment, working through all phases of the software development life cycle.:
    • 8+ years of Cloud based SaaS leadership experience with Software development teams
    • 10+ years of hands-on Software development & architecture experience
  • Proven experience with
    • product strategy and communication via presentations to business executives and technical audience
    • leading architects, large development teams with agile development methodologies & automated testing, deployment technologies.
  • Hands on leadership experience working within multiple technology stacks including mobile (iOS/Android – react-native), web (HTML5/related technologies – react, JavaScript etc), and analytics platforms
  • Significant depth of knowledge on designing, implementing, and deploying applications on AWS and/or GCP
  • Experience managing globally distributed software teams
  • Extensive experience recruiting and working with a growing engineering team, both in people and process
  • Experience establishing development roadmaps in collaboration with Product teams
  • Experience working with and balancing a fast-paced, environment with steady and predictable team delivery
  • 3+ years of experience working with customers in a regulated industry (e.g. GxP, HIPAA) preferred
  • Experience with IoT (Internet of Things) technology and applications is preferred 
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, for internal and external customers is a must
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of management
  • Demonstrated proficiency leveraging different staffing strategies (FTEs, contractors, off- and near-shore, consultants, etc) to manage flexing staffing demands
  • Have an entrepreneurial mindset and bring ideas to the table
